In Missouri, can a parent be charged if a child gets the parent's unlocked gun and accidentally shoots someone? Yes. Minors can own or possess long guns, but under federal law, a person must be 18 or older to possess a handgun and be 21 or older to buy one. Can an adult legally sell or give a rifle to a 17-year-old? Do you have to register any firearms in Missouri? Do you need a permit to own a firearm in Missouri? That prohibition does not apply if the minor is on premises owned or leased by the minor, a parent, a guardian or an immediate family member, or if the pistol is being used for farming, ranching, hunting, trapping, target shooting or gun safety instruction. Missouri has no minimum-age law on the books for buying firearms.
